What is VIEWS about?
Context
The "Volunteering for Inclusion and Empowerment with Sports (VIEWS)" project emerges against a backdrop of underrepresentation and inadequate inclusion of people with disabilities in the sphere of sports, more specifically within volunteering roles. Studies and observations reveal that despite possessing the willingness and capabilities, persons with disabilities frequently encounter barriers to participation, ranging from physical accessibility issues to a lack of awareness and supportive practices among sports organisations.
This gap not only undermines the diverse potential of sports volunteering ecosystems but also contradicts the core values of inclusivity and equality that the European Union champions. Recognising the transformative power of sports as a universal language of solidarity, inclusion, and empowerment, VIEWS aims to redefine the narrative — shifting the perception of persons with disabilities from being mere recipients of services to becoming active, contributing members within the sports community.
Objectives
Empower Persons with Disabilities:
Empower people with disabilities by providing them with opportunities to serve as volunteers in sporting events, thereby enhancing their skills, confidence, and social inclusion.
Promote Inclusive Sports Volunteering Practices:
Develop and disseminate resources, training, and best practices for sports clubs and organisations to integrate volunteers with disabilities effectively.
Foster Awareness and Advocacy:
Increase awareness of the capabilities and contributions of persons with disabilities among the wider sports community, advocating for more inclusive and equitable practices.
